How to Get Started with Essential Oils
I started using essential oils, in hopes to have less toxins in our home. The seasonal scented candles were my favorite, but the time came when every time I would light a candle a headache would come. I love the aroma of each season – it is a part of my home that I love and makes it feel like home. I didn’t want to give it up and started looking for alternatives. My sister-in-law introduced me to a few accounts on Instagram that led me to learn about essential oils.
The benefits of essential oils and how to use them in so many different ways, got me even more interested and I had to give them a try! I started looking more into oils and all the different products they offer. I ordered my starter kit and have been using them ever since!

I never realized it before, but there are so many toxins in the things that we use everyday. From candles, to house cleaners to deodorant. The options I now have with essential oils are some of my favorite products that I use everyday.
Getting started with essential oils might seem a bit overwhelming, but there are some basics to get started and that will make it all worth it. As soon as you get started and more familiar with the essential oils you’re using, you’ll want to start adding more to your collection.
3 Ways to Use Essential Oils
Topically – Soak them in. You can apply some essential oils directly to your body, but it is usually recommended to use a carrier oil (coconut oil/jojoba oil). Many times people like to make roller bottles with a few drops of oil and a carrier oil added to it.

Aromatically – Breathe them in. Use a diffuser, which is one of the most common ways to use essential oils. Diffusers create a fine mist into the air of the room it is in and is an instant way to help with allergies, moods and more. You can also ad 1-2 drops in your hand and cup them over your nose and mouth and breathe in.

Internally – Take them in. This means you can add them into food or drinks, as well as vegetable capsules to swallow. Please know that now all oils are to be ingested, so check labels before you do.
My Favorite Ways to Use Essential Oils
Diffusing I absolutely love the different diffuser blends I can make the the variety of oils I have on hand. I typically start my day with one blend, either to boost our moods or get the room smelling more seasonal. Then end the day with something to wind down and lavender – especially in our little one’s room.
Face Oil/Moisturizer Once I learned the benefits of some specific oils for my skin and the combination of them with jojoba oil, I had to give it a try. I make a glow serum to use daily and add oils that I feel work best for my skin.
- Frankincense (brightens skin, fights blemishes, promotes healthy skin)
- Geranium (promotes smooth and healthy skin)
- Lavender (great for healthy glowing skin)
- Copaiba (helps with inflammation)
I add about 20 drops of each to a dropper bottle and top the rest of the bottle with jojoba oil. I use jojoba oil for my face because it has anti-inflammatory properties, reduces redness and keeps the skin calm and comfortable.
Rollers I love the idea of being able to combine some oils together to roll on when I need them most. I have created rollers for allergies, anxiety, sleep and more. It’s also great to have these made and ready to go when we are on the go or travel too. Another great roller to make is perfume! I add together a few of my all time favorite oils to a roll on to finish getting ready every day.
- Immunity – Thieves, lemon and frankincense, topped with carrier oil.
- Allergies – Peppermint, lavender and lemon, topped with carrier oil.
- Perfume – Bergamont, citrus fresh, northern lights, lime and grapefruit, topped with carrier oil
